Read: Romans 6:23; 1 Peter 1:18, 19

What is true of you in a sinful state? Can a person free themselves from the slavery of sin? Can a person buy their way out of condemnation? Why or why not? What frees a person from sin? Today give your sin to Jesus. Let Him remove it.


Read: Matthew 20:28; Romans 3:21-22; 2 Corinthians 5:21

What is the ransom payment for your sin? Why is Christ sufficient to deal with your sin? What does faith have to do with becoming right with God? Today thank God for being the ransom payment for you. Tell Jesus that you are placing your faith in Him and His work on the cross.


Atonement means At-one-ment – to become one /(reconciled and restored) after having been separated by sin. According to the Scriptures, we are all sinners and that sin is costly. Therefore to be freed from sin, the sin must be paid for. This week we are looking at the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ.

To atone for means to make amends. In the Bible, atonement is associated with man’s sin. God commanded Israel to set aside one day each year as the day of atonement. What about today? Is there only one time a person can make amends? Do we need to offer an animal on an altar? God had said, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul. ” How are we to make amends today?
