Read: Exodus 13: 20-22; Exodus 14:19-20; Deuteronomy 31:6-8

What did God give the people to lead them through the desert? Why was this a secure object for the people? What harm could befall them when the pillar was in place? What promise does He give to us regarding how He leads us? How does God lead you? Do you have that assurance of constant leading? What about those times when He seems far away or completely gone? Today, claim those promises of His constant leading and care. Thank Him for His guiding light.

Read: Exodus 10:21-29

What was going on in Egypt that a plague of darkness was dropped on the land? What was unique about this darkness (21b, 23)? Close your eyes and try walking. Can you ‘feel the darkness’ when you come close to objects like tables or walls? What does this abject darkness mean? What was wrong with Pharaoh? Why did the Jewish section of Egypt not become affected by this plague of darkness? What spiritual implications does this passage give us regarding those who are in spiritual darkness? Today, ask God to release you from any spiritual darkness. Do not allow yourself to become hardened to the Lord.

Churches use light as a symbolic picture of being able to see what was in darkness, the burning away of the dross of sin to purify a life and the hope of heaven’s blessing in our life. This week we celebrate the first week of Advent. We will dig deeper into the meaning of God giving us His light.

Read: Genesis 1:1-19

Biblical creation is very different from what secular science suggests. How were the heavens and the earth created? Process how God could just speak and “there was light.” (Vs. 3). What does that say about God? What did God do with this light? Why? What was the light good for (vs. 5-7, 11-18)? What happens when there is no light? As we head into the ‘dark days of winter’, thank God today for giving us the wonderful gift of light.
